How to Connect Wireless Headsets to a Landline Phone (2024)

Before we go through how to connect your wireless headset to a landline phone, we need to understand, what is a landline telephone?

A landline telephone is a device with a physical line to a telecommunications network. Landline telephones use a phone handset with a keypad on the base of the phone for inbound and outbound phone calls.

With the introduction of VoIP, landline phone use is declining for 4 reasons.

  1. VoIP is much more cost effective.
  2. VoIP services offer more flexibility. For example, you can use your mobile phone or computer as an extension to your office phone.
  3. VoIP systems allow you to purchase equipment outright and have your IT team manage the service.
  4. VoIP only relies on your internet connection, allowing support of an unlimited number of lines.

That being said, if you're using a landline telephone, follow this helpful guide on connecting a wireless headset to your office phone.

1) Landline phone WITH 2.5mm port:

Not all landline phones have a 2.5mm port. If yours does and you want to be able to press a button on your phone to answer/end calls, add the extension cordto go with your wireless landline headset.

Using your wireless headset: Remove your headset from the charging base, then press the headset button on your office phone to answer/end calls.

2) Landline phone WITHOUT 2.5mm port:

If your landline phone doesn't have a headset port, you'll be required to manually pickup, and hang up your phone handset to answer/end calls with your wireless landline headset. Most customers add a Handset Lifter to go with their wireless headset, so you're able to answer/end calls when away from the phone.

That means, when there's an incoming call and you're away from the desk, you don't have to run back to the phone, or if you're at the phone, you press the on button on your headset to be on a call. Rather than having to physically pick up your handset, then hang it up when done.

  1. Plug in the AC power to the wall outlet, then plug the other end into your headset charging base.
  2. Unplug your landline phone handset from the base of your telephone, then plug the other end into the back of your charging base with the symbol of a handset.
  3. Connect the included RJ9 phone cord to the back of your wireless phone headset charging base.
  4. Plug the other end of the RJ9 phone cord into the base of your landline phone where the handset would normally plug into.

Using your wireless headset

Remove your headset from the charging base, then remove your handset to answer a call, hang it back up to end the phone call. Follow the quick video below as an example of connecting a telephone with wireless headset.

Handset Lifter (highly recommended)

Adding a Handset Lifter to go with your wireless landline headset is highly recommended.

  • You'll be able to answer/end calls when away from the landline phone- no more running back to your phone to answer a call
  • More calls answered and less returned phone calls you'll have to make, after listening to voicemails
  • Better user experience- you press one button to answer/end calls, rather than physically removing your handset and hanging it up

Reference the quick video below, so you can see how a Handset Lifter is installed on your office phone with a wireless headset.

Warning!

Wireless landline headsets ARE NOT Bluetooth. So, before you start searching on Google or Amazon for a Bluetooth headset, avoid wasting the time seeking a cheap Bluetooth headset because it won't work. Bluetooth headsets are designed for mobile phones or computers, not landline phones.

Most wireless headsets for landline phones operate on DECT 6.0 technology, rather than Bluetooth. Although this is a wireless frequency as well, DECT headsets operate on their own channel to avoid interference from common devices like Bluetooth or Wifi.

Side Note: When using a wireless headset on a corded landline phone, you won't be able to place calls on hold or dial out from the headset. Those features are all done from your office phone.
