Wichita - Jason Lee Nelson, 47, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2024. He was born on June 19, 1976 in Manhattan to Jim Nelson and Susan (Downing) Jacobs. Jason married Megan (Kanngiesser) Nelson on July 27, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were married for 7 years.
Jason graduated from Rock Creek High School and earned his Associate Degree from Garden City Community College. He worked most recently as a paramedic for Pratt County EMS since 2018 and was the Director of Caldwell EMS. He previously worked at Harper Co., Mulvane, Medicine Lodge and Kansas Heart Hospital. He spent many years as a flight paramedic for LifeTeam where he met the love of his life, Megan. He was a member of Kansas EMS Association (KEMSA) and KSHSAA where he was an official for High School Basketball. He worked for Grant Co Fire/Rescue and Jackson Co Fire/Rescue as well. Prior to his EMS career he was a Certified Pipefitter. He enjoyed everything KU especially watching basketball and all other sports, going on cruises, fishing, hunting, his dogs, watching ID Channel and going to the Casino and winning every time. As a child he attended many KU home games with his grandparents. He had the biggest smile and was a great pool boy. He especially loved spoiling his nieces and nephew.
He is survived by his wife, Megan Nelson of Wichita; daughters, Kenzie, Kylie and Kinley Nelson all of Hiawatha, Liberty Kay Aranda of Kansas City, Missouri; bonus kids, Brenden and Brilynn Horn of Wichita; mother, Susan (Jim) Jacobs of Junction City; father, Jim Nelson of Topeka; sisters, Heather Williams of Horton and Crystal Martin of Texas; brothers, Kyle (Erica) Nelson of McPherson and Jared Nelson; grandparents, Margaret Nelson of St. George; parents in-law, Mark (Cheryl) Kanngiesser of Zenda; brother in-law, Cooper (Kylie) Kanngiesser of Attica; best friend, Dave (Amanda) Harbour of Pratt; and his EMS family.
Jason is preceded in death by his infant twins, Jordan and Jessica Nelson; grandparents, Orlin and Lona Downing and grandfather, Francis Nelson; and best friend, Nathan Cowger.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Thursday, March 28, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5-7 at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Rd, Pratt. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 29, 2024 at Larrison Mortuary with Pastor Tom Walters presiding. The family requests that everyone wear their KU attire.
