What are Mangos?

Mango is a stone fruit produced from numerous species of tropical trees with a large seed in the middle. Mangos contain over 20 different vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B6, and fiber. One serving is around ¾ cups of cut mangos and contains only 70 calories! They’re such a healthy snack and we love incorporating it into our meals at home. What Are The Different Types of Mangos? How Do I Tell They’re Ripe?

Can you believe that there are over 500 mango varieties grown all over? Quite a lot of mangos to choose from! Here are the ones you may find at your local grocery store and how to tell if they are ripe or not.

Haden: The Haden mangos have a sweet and sour taste with them but there’s a slightly bitter after taste of tropical fruit to it. They have firm flesh due to fine fibers and are bright red with green and yellow overtones and small white dots. When the green parts turn yellow, they have ripened.

Honey Mangos (Ataulfo): Honey mangos taste sweet and sour with tropical peachy notes to them. The honey mangoes have vibrant yellow skin and have a very small seed. They also don’t have a ton of fibers in mango and have a smooth texture. When the mango’s skin turns to a deep golden color and small wrinkles appear, the mangos have ripened.

Francis Mangos: Sweet and fruity, Francis mangos also have a peachy and tropical note to them. The texture is soft, juicy, but there are some fibers in it compared to the Honey Mangos. They are bright yellow but have green overtones to the skin. Once the green overtones have started to fade and the bright yellow turns golden, the mango has ripened.

Tommy Aktins: The Tommy Aktins mangos is one of the most common mangos you’ll see as they are the most commercially grown. They’re more tart but with sweet notes. Their skin is a dark shade of red with some green and orange-yellow accents around. Unfortunately, there aren’t any visual cues to determine if the mango has ripened. You’ll have to give it a squeeze and if they have a give to it, then it’s ripe.

How to Store Fresh Mangos

  • Keep unripe mangos at room temperature if you aren’t in a rush to eat them.
  • Once ripe, move the mangos to the fridge to slow down the ripening process if you do not plan on eating them immediately.
  • Store mangos inside a brown paper bag and leave them on the counter if you want to ripen them quickly.
  • If Mangos are already cut, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for around 4-5 days.

Can I Freeze Cut Mango?

You can definitely freeze cut mangos. Simply line a sheet pan with parchment paper and place your cut mango in a single layer over top. Transfer the sheet pan to the freezer and freeze until the mangos are hard around 2-3 hours. Then transfer the frozen mango pieces into a freezer-safe bag and store them in the freezer until ready to enjoy.
